WASHINGTON, D.C. — A unique calendar quirk is creating an unusual payment pattern for millions of older Americans this summer.
Some beneficiaries will see three Social Security-related deposits arrive within roughly a five-week period surrounding August 2026. However, these are not bonus payments or extra benefits. Instead, they result from the way the Social Security Administration (SSA) schedules payments when the first day of the month falls on a weekend.
Here’s a closer look at who may receive three deposits—and who will not.
Why Three Payments Appear Around August
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is normally paid on the first day of each month.
Because August 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday, the SSA moved the August SSI payment to Friday, July 31, 2026, following its standard policy of issuing payments on the preceding business day whenever the normal payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
For beneficiaries who also receive regular Social Security retirement, survivor, or disability benefits, the payment schedule could look like this:
- July 31 — August SSI payment (issued early)
- August 3 — Regular monthly Social Security payment
- August 31 or September 1 — September SSI payment, depending on the calendar
As a result, some households may notice three separate federal benefit deposits during this period. These are simply regularly scheduled monthly benefits arriving on adjusted dates.
Who Could Receive Three Payments?
The payment pattern generally applies to people who:
- Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
- Also receive Social Security retirement, survivor, or SSDI benefits.
- Receive their Social Security payment on the monthly schedule applicable to dual beneficiaries.
Many of these recipients are seniors with limited income who qualify for SSI in addition to their earned Social Security benefits.
Who Will NOT Receive Three Payments?
Most Social Security beneficiaries will not receive three payments.
You are generally not part of this payment pattern if you:
- Receive only Social Security retirement benefits.
- Receive only Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
- Receive only survivor benefits.
- Do not qualify for Supplemental Security Income.

- August 19 — Birth dates from the 11th through the 20th
- August 26 — Birth dates from the 21st through the 31st
Recipients who began collecting Social Security before May 1997—or who receive both SSI and Social Security under SSA rules—generally receive their monthly Social Security payment on August 3.
Why There Is No SSI Payment During August
Some recipients may notice that no SSI payment arrives during the month of August.
That’s because the August benefit was already deposited on July 31.
The next SSI payment will arrive according to the September payment schedule.
This happens several times each year whenever the first day of a month falls on a weekend or federal holiday. It is simply a scheduling adjustment and does not increase annual benefit amounts.
Don’t Mistake It for Extra Money
Financial experts encourage beneficiaries to budget carefully whenever an early SSI payment occurs.
