Millions of Social Security beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their regular monthly payments on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
But the payment will not go to everyone receiving Social Security.
Under the Social Security Administration’s regular payment schedule, October 21 is the third Wednesday of the month, which means it is generally the payment date for beneficiaries whose applicable birth date falls between the 11th and 20th. The payment schedule is based on the birth date of the person whose earnings record establishes entitlement to the benefit.
That means beneficiaries with applicable birth dates from the 1st through 10th were scheduled for October 14, while those in the 21st through 31st group are scheduled for October 28.
Who gets a Social Security payment on October 21?
The main group scheduled to receive a payment on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, is beneficiaries whose applicable birth date falls from:
11th through 20th of the month
The standard schedule used by SSA is:
| Applicable birth date | Payment day | October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1st–10th | Second Wednesday | October 14 |
| 11th–20th | Third Wednesday | October 21 |
| 21st–31st | Fourth Wednesday | October 28 |
The SSA says this birthday-based schedule generally applies to people who filed for Social Security benefits on or after May 1, 1997.
So, for example, a beneficiary whose applicable birth date is the 12th, 15th or 20th would generally fall into the October 21 payment group.
Your birth date may not be the date used for scheduling
One detail can cause confusion for people receiving family or survivor benefits.
The SSA explains that the payment day is based on the birth date of the insured individual whose earnings record establishes entitlement. That means the relevant date can be someone else’s birth date if you receive benefits based on another person’s work record.
For example, a person receiving a benefit based on a spouse’s record may have a payment schedule determined using the spouse’s qualifying birth date.
Because of this, beneficiaries should check their own SSA information rather than assuming the payment date solely from their personal birthday.
Who does not get a payment on October 21?
Two other groups using the regular Wednesday schedule have different October payment dates.
Birth dates 1st through 10th
These beneficiaries were scheduled to receive their October payment on:
Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Birth dates 21st through 31st
These beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their October payment on:
Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Not receiving a payment on October 21 does not automatically mean that someone’s benefits have been suspended or that the person is ineligible.
In many cases, the person simply belongs to one of the other scheduled payment groups.
Some Social Security beneficiaries follow a different calendar
The Wednesday schedule does not apply to everyone.
The SSA says that people who received or applied for Social Security benefits on or before April 30, 1997, generally receive their Social Security benefit on the third day of the month.
People who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) also generally have their Social Security payment scheduled for the third of the month and their SSI payment for the first of the month. People who receive only SSI generally receive SSI on the first of the month.
That means an individual can receive Social Security and still have no Social Security payment scheduled for October 21.
What about SSI?
SSI has its own payment schedule.
SSI payments generally arrive on the first day of the month, except when the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, in which case the payment can be moved to the preceding business day.
Therefore, beneficiaries should not use the Wednesday Social Security schedule to determine when an SSI payment is due.
October 2026 payment schedule at a glance
For the standard birthday-based Social Security schedule, October looks like this:
| Date | Payment group |
|---|---|
| Oct. 14, 2026 | Birth dates 1st–10th |
| Oct. 21, 2026 | Birth dates 11th–20th |
| Oct. 28, 2026 | Birth dates 21st–31st |
The official SSA calendar also identifies separate payment arrangements for SSI and beneficiaries covered by the older payment rules.
Is October 21 an extra Social Security check?
No.
The October 21 payment is a regular Social Security benefit payment for beneficiaries assigned to the third-Wednesday schedule.
It is not a bonus, stimulus payment or special October benefit.
The amount a person receives is also not determined by the payment date. Benefit amounts depend on the individual’s Social Security record and the type of benefit being paid.
For retirement beneficiaries, factors such as lifetime covered earnings and claiming age can have a major effect on the monthly benefit.
When should the money arrive?
The official payment date is October 21, but the exact time the funds become visible in a bank account can vary by financial institution and payment method.
The SSA’s 2026 payment calendar advises beneficiaries who do not receive their payment on the expected date to allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.
People receiving electronic payments should first check their bank account or other designated payment account.
Beneficiaries can also use their personal my Social Security account to review benefit information and other account details.
What if your payment is missing?
A missing payment does not necessarily mean a loss of benefits.
Before contacting SSA, beneficiaries should verify:
- that October 21 is actually their assigned payment date;
- that the payment is not scheduled under a different Social Security or SSI rule;
- that their bank or payment account has been checked;
- and that the appropriate waiting period has passed.
The SSA specifically advises allowing three additional mailing days after the expected date before contacting the agency.
October 21 payment is separate from the new 2027 COLA
There is another major Social Security development this month that beneficiaries should not confuse with the October 21 payment.
On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027. SSA says nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the increase beginning in January 2027.
The agency estimates that the average Social Security retirement benefit will increase by approximately $75 per month. However, an individual’s actual increase will depend on the amount of that person’s current benefit.
The October 21 payment does not include the 2027 COLA.
The 3.6% increase applies to benefits beginning in January 2027. It is not added to the October 2026 payment. SSI’s increased payments begin with the payment scheduled for December 31, 2026.
That distinction is important because beneficiaries may see news about the new COLA while also waiting for their regular October payment.
How much will the 2027 COLA increase benefits?
SSA’s official 2027 fact sheet provides estimated average benefit amounts before and after the COLA.
For all retired workers, the average monthly benefit is estimated to increase from approximately $2,095 before the COLA to $2,170 after the 3.6% adjustment.
Individual beneficiaries may see a larger or smaller dollar increase because the adjustment is a percentage of their own benefit.
For example, a person receiving $2,000 a month would have a gross increase of about $72 at a 3.6% COLA, while someone receiving $3,000 would have an increase of about $108, before any applicable deductions.
These examples are mathematical illustrations; the actual payment amount can also be affected by deductions and other circumstances.
2027 changes go beyond the COLA
SSA has also announced several other automatic adjustments for 2027.
The maximum taxable earnings amount will rise from $184,500 in 2026 to $192,300 in 2027. The earnings-test limit for workers below full retirement age will rise to $25,560 in 2027, while the limit for people reaching full retirement age during 2027 will rise to $67,920.
The maximum monthly retirement benefit for a worker retiring at full retirement age will increase from $4,152 in 2026 to $4,188 in 2027.
These are separate from the October payment schedule.
What retirees should know about October 21
For beneficiaries scheduled under the normal Wednesday system, the most important number is the 11th through 20th birth-date range.
If the applicable birth date falls within that range, the scheduled payment date is:
Wednesday, October 21, 2026
If the applicable birth date falls from the 1st through the 10th, the payment was scheduled for October 14.
If it falls from the 21st through the 31st, the payment is scheduled for October 28.
Beneficiaries following older payment rules or receiving both Social Security and SSI may have different dates.
Bottom line
Wednesday, October 21, 2026, is the scheduled Social Security payment date for the third-Wednesday group.
For beneficiaries covered by the standard birthday-based schedule:
Birth date 1st–10th → October 14
Birth date 11th–20th → October 21
Birth date 21st–31st → October 28
The October 21 payment is a regular 2026 Social Security payment, not an extra check.
And while the SSA has now announced a 3.6% COLA for 2027, that increase does not appear in the October 21 payment. The new COLA begins with applicable benefits payable in January 2027.
Beneficiaries who are unsure about their payment date should rely on their official SSA information and the agency’s payment calendar rather than assuming that every Social Security recipient is paid on the same day.
